This vent cover was a part of the 1869 Plum Island lighthouse. When the Coast Guard abandoned the lighthouse in 1978, some of its historical components were removed as souvenirs. The one below ended up in the hands of a former USCG keeper who had been stationed at the lighthouse near the end of its active life. Many of these vents, I'm told, ended up as ashtrays. This one, we hope, will become a museum exhibit, and will also be used to construct replacement covers for installation on the lighthouse when it is restored. Note the fine brass craftsmanship of the era.
