  • 2007 New York Harbor Cruise

The Long Island Chapter co-sponsored a NY Harbor Cruise on Saturday, June 2, 2007. Lighthouse lovers from around the country enjoyed a lighthouse viewing cruise aboard the Sheryll Princess. Lights that we viewed on the cruise included: Great Beds, West Bank, Old Orchard, Romer Shoal, Robbins Reef, Statue of Liberty, Fort Wadsworth, and Coney Island/Norton Point. We also enjoyed a hot lunch on board the boat.
This cruise was organized by Dave Hannum. Dave is a charter member of the LI Chapter. In recent years Dave has planned the Harbour Lights Collectors Reunion on Mackinac Island, Michigan, as well as leading lighthouse tours along the coast of Lake Erie; to the Tidewater area in Virginia; and along the central Maine coast. Dave made a significant contribution to the LI Chapter for attendees who participated in the cruise and designated a LI CHAPTER referral. Many LI Chapter Board members were aboard and provided souvenirs, raffle tickets, etc. Many thanks to Bob Scroope who provided a number of raffle prizes from his personal collection.

  • 2007 Plum Island Trip

This year's Plum Island Lighthouse trip took place on Friday, August 17. We were permitted to assemble 35 history buffs and lighthouse enthusiasts and we had a glorious day. Our group included members of LIC-USLHS, Save Huntington Harbor Lighthouse, Horton Point Lighthouse, Southold Historical Society, Cutchogue New Suffolk Historical Council, Brecknock Hall Foundation, Fire Island Lighthouse, East End Seaport Museum and Marine Foundation, and former Plum Island Lighthouse Coastguardsman Rich Kenny....a very knowledgeable and impressive group! Our hosts on Plum Island were Kris Garland and Director Dr. Barrett, who is very interested in restoring the lighthouse and has budgeted for repairs beginning this year. He said "After all, it is our logo!" We have sent him the architectural surveys he requested to help establish priorities in the work and we included the final steps to achieve listing on the National Register of Historic Places. We had a great day, a very successful trip, and we are now looking forward to seeing a stabilized Lighthouse with a bright future. Thank you again to our hosts who gave generously of their time, both in preparation and throughout the day.

Read a note from Rich Kenny about this trip.

  • Lantern Walk to Cedar Island Lighthouse

    Hello,

My name is Bob Allen and my great-grandfather was the last lighthouse keeper of this lighthouse. The lighthouse is located in Suffolk's Cedar Point County Park. My father and uncle were also raised on this lighthouse. The lighthouse was originally located on Cedar Island, hence the name. The hurricane of 1938 deposited so much sand that the island became part of what is now called Cedar Point.

First of all, I would like to thank all those who participated in the walking tours during 2007. I enjoyed each and every tour and met so many really great people.

I will be announcing the date of my first 2008 tour within a few months.

I also want to announce that anyone who contributes $300 or more to the Long Island Lighthouse Society will get a personal tour by me out to the lighthouse from Cedar Point Park. This will also include special postcards that I will personally autograph to whomever is with me on that tour. All such donations will be used solely for the restoration of the Cedar Island lighthouse.

If you are interested in a tour please call me at the telephone number noted below.

    Sincerely,

    Bob Allen
    Descendantof William H. Follett
The last lighthouse keeper of the Cedar Island Lighthouse

For information or to schedule a free Lantern Walk contact Bob Allen, Chapter Director and great grandson of William Follet, the last Cedar Island Lighthouse Keeper. Bob can be reached on his cell phone at (631) 481-6248.
