CEDAR ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE RESTORATION UNDERWAY

One of Long Island’s most endangered lighthouses needs the public’s help. The restoration of the Cedar Island Lighthouse, located in Cedar Point County Park, East Hampton, began earlier this year, and needs public support to complete this year’s project goals.

The Long Island Lighthouse Society recently announced plans, approved by the Suffolk County Parks Department, to restore the lighthouse’s 1902 brick oil house. This oil house is the only outbuilding remaining from the once busy light station, which was decommissioned in 1934. The oil house will be restored by noted Long Island historic preservation contractor, Walter DeGroot. The project will cost $20,000, and the Society is requesting donations from the public to have the oil house restored this Fall

According to Society President Bob Muller, “This is a very important part of the overall project, and condition of the oil house requires that we act quickly to avoid the loss of historic integrity of the structure.”

In 2002, the Suffolk County Parks Department, which owns the lighthouse, and the Long Island Lighthouse Society entered into a stewardship agreement to restore the burned and beaten 1868 granite lighthouse. Since that time, research has been done, the lighthouse has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places, preliminary restoration work has been accomplished on the damaged roof and interior, and a full architectural assessment has been scheduled for this Summer.

Donations may be made by check, PayPal, or at the Historic Lantern Walk event to be held at the lighthouse on August 2. For more information, call the Long Island Lighthouse Society at 631-207-4331, visit www.LILighthouseSociety.org , or contact CedarIslandLight@LILighthouseSociety.org .
