For Immediate Release
FIRST ANNUAL SUFFOLK COUNTY LIGHTHOUSE DAY IS NEAR!
Saturday, March 22, will be the first celebration of Suffolk County
Lighthouse Day, an official county holiday proclaimed by the County
Legislature and signed by County Executive Robert J. Gaffney last year.
The event will take place from 11AM to 3PM, at Cedar Point County Park in
East Hampton, site of the Cedar Island Lighthouse, which is currently
undergoing restoration.
"Not only will this event help to raise funds for the restoration of the
Cedar Island Lighthouse," said Gaffney, "but it will also help to raise
awareness for the historical and architectural significance of all Long
Island Lighthouses."
The celebration will feature lighthouse and history displays, interactive
educational activities, nature and history walks, kite-flying exhibitions
and lessons, kayaking demonstrations, arts and crafts vendors (many of
them lighthouse-related), the Peconic Amateur Radio Club, Peconic Bay
Power Squadron, Project Liberty, Home Sweet Home Museum, Railroad Museum
of Long Island, National Lighthouse Museum, New Jersey Lighthouse Society,
Huntington Lighthouse Preservation Society, Fire Island Lighthouse
Preservation Society, East End Seaport Museum & Marine Foundation, and
more.
