| The 5th order bivalve Fresnel lens on display at
Montauk Point was manufactured by the famous Henry-LePaute company. It is unusual for
several reasons: 1. You don't see too many 5th order lenses
on display, especially in this condition.
2. This lens also contains a 5th order oil lamp, another oddity.
3. The lens has a reflector panel, shown open in this photo. This
panel would have been on the side of the lens that faced land. The lens in the Eatons Neck lighthouse, also manufactured by Henry-LePaute, and still in service, has such a
reflector panel.
The fifth order lens was the next-to-smallest lens used in
American lighthouses. On Long Island, the Long Beach Bar and Huntington Harbor lighthouses
are among those that used this size lens. |
