Plum Island Trip April 26, 2013

Originally planned for October 2012 and cancelled due to mega-storm Sandy, the Plum Island trip finally took place on April 26, 2013. The Department of Homeland Security kindly increased our capacity to 70 guests, whom we rapidly recruited. Members of the LI Chapter USLHS, Fire Island Lighthouse, and Montauk Point Lighthouse comprised the lighthouse-savvy group, and the weather cooperated fully.

Department of Homeland Security Host Kris Garland also arranged to expand the trip, adding a side trip to Race Rock Lighthouse to the east of Plum Island. So our guests saw a total of 5 lighthouses, each unique architecturally. They saw Long Beach Bar Lighthouse (Number 1) as they drove to the parking lot in Orient Point. From the water they viewed Orient Point Lighthouse, Little Gull Light, and Race Rock Lighthouse (Numbers 2, 3, and 4). They then toured Plum Island, viewing the Fort Terry buildings and sites (built 1899 for the Spanish American War). At Plum Island Lighthouse (Number 5), the Plum Island Staff updated our guests on the status of the restoration and the extensive plans for the tower, which has corrosion problems. The Plum Island Lighthouse was last occupied and maintained by the Coast Guard on August 31, 1978.

We are very grateful for the arrangements made by Host Kris Garland, Fire Island Lighthouse Coordinator Lynn Dunlop, Montauk Point Lighthouse Director Brian Pope, and last but not least LI Chapter members Susan Yuen, Terry Elkins, Brian Keena and Carol House.
